Hamilton Hall was named for Joseph Grégoire de Roulhac Hamilton in 1972. During his tenure as head of the history department from 1908 to 1930, Hamilton made it a leading center for the study of the South. The letters, diaries, and other papers Hamilton gathered after traveling across the South in search of manuscripts relevant to southern history became the foundation of the Southern Historical Collection, now the world's largest repository of southern historical documents.
