Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) is a performance-based educational method that uses theater to help people express themselves and challenge oppression. Brazilian theater practitioner Augusto Boal developed these participatory theatrical forms in the 1970s. this session will use allow students to engage in the following two practices:
Image Theater is a creative way to use our bodies rather than language to explore the complexity of collaborating to solve social problems. The training places special emphasis on the role of allies and witnesses in addressing oppressive situations.
Newspaper Theater is a method of critically engaging with media coverage of contemporary issues by transforming non-dramatic texts into performance. Newspaper Theater is a creative tool to promote media literacy.
Leslie Garvin is the Executive Director of NC Campus Engagement. She develops and leads member institution recruitment and retention strategies, facilitates faculty and staff professional development initiatives, and builds strategic partnerships to develop and expand higher education civic engagement, and oversees day-to-day operations. A passionate civic builder and bridger, she is a skilled facilitator and trainer in dialogue and deliberation having trained hundreds of faculty, staff, students, and community partners across the state and country in multiple dialogue methods. She is a frequent speaker on topics related to higher education community and civic engagement, democracy, and civil discourse and dialogue.
