PROGRAM
The Abele Saxophone Quartet was formed in 2023 by four friends – all music professors (at Duke University, UNC Chapel Hill, and UNC Greensboro) – for a performance of worship music in the historic Duke University Chapel. The Abele Saxophone Quartet is named in celebration of the historic accomplishments of Julian Abele, primary architect of Duke’s beautiful campus. The Abele Saxophone Quartet performs an eclectic mix of music from transcriptions of older music to original new music and jazz standards arranged for saxophone quartet. In the Fall of 2025, the quartet gave a concert of world premieres written for the ensemble presented by Duke University’s Music Graduate Student Association in conjunction with Duke Music and Erich Barganier. More recently, the quartet performed the iconic, genre-bending work “Super Glue,” (written by their baritone saxophonist, Mark Engebretson) at the 2026 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium.
