Join UNC Global Affairs for a Diplomatic Discussion with Jens-Hinrich Binder, professor and former dean of the faculty of law at the University of Tübingen. Binder will examine U.S.-EU relations through a legal lens, with particular attention to compliance law and transatlantic regulatory frameworks. His discussion will explore how legal structures shape cooperation — and friction — between the United States and the European Union.

The Diplomatic Discussion speaker series is part of Carolina’s Diplomacy Initiative, which introduces students to shared global challenges and provides them opportunities to practice skills necessary to address those challenges. In 2025, UNC Global Affairs launched the Carolina Diplomacy Fellows for students interested in deepening their engagement with the Diplomacy Initiative.

Jens-Hinrich Binder is professor of private law, corporate law, banking and securities law at Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen (since 2013), where he also serves as co-director of the Tübingen Research Institute on Determinants of Economic Activity (TRIDEA). He read law at the University of Freiburg from 1995, from where he graduated in 2000 and obtained a doctorate in law in 2003. He also holds an LL.M. in banking and finance law from the London School of Economics and Political Science (2001). His undergraduate, LL.M. and doctoral studies were funded by scholarships from Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes, a non-political foundation, and Bucerius Foundation, respectively. Having passed the Second State Examination (qualifying as a legal practitioner) in 2004, he completed his post-doctoral degree of Habilitation in 2010. Prior to joining the Tübingen Faculty, he held a professorship at EBS University (2011-13) and visiting professorial positions at the Universities of Munich (2010) and Mainz (2010-11). 

His research interests focus on the areas of banking and securities regulation, corporate and insolvency law. He has published two treatises on bank insolvency law and the regulation of corporations, respectively, as well as numerous articles in both German and international edited journals and law reviews. Both treatises have received awards for outstanding research from the University of Freiburg. He serves on the editorial boards of two leading German and one international banking and financial law journals, as well as on an expert panel advising the German Federal Ministry of Finance on matters of banking and financial regulation. As from 2025, he also serves as part-time judge in matters of corporate law at the Stuttgart Court of Appeals. He has held visiting professorships at various universities in Europe and Asia (including, in 2023, the Global Shimizu Visiting Professorship at LSE Law School), lectures regularly within Germany and abroad, and has been consulted by a wide range of German and European public and governmental institutions. He is fellow academic member of the European Banking Institute (EBI) and research member of the European Corporate Institute (ecgi).
