Facilitating Food Donations and Reducing Food Waste: Developing Statewide Food Safety Standard Operating Procedures

Monday, February 24, 2025 12:00pm to 1:00pm EST

This event is online only. Please register to receive the Zoom link.

This work was inspired by Local Food Council partners who were frustrated by the inconsistent rules across the state for donation of prepared food to address food insecurity. We plan to use a brief PowerPoint presentation to provide a broad overview of the North Carolina Local Food Council’s Food Recovery Working Group’s history, and its partnership with NC State and A Simple Gesture Food Recovery organization. To make the content accessible, we will guide the audience through a case study highlighting food recovery from both the donor’s and the receiving organization’s perspectives. To encourage active participation, audience members will be asked to share stories about their own experience and receive a copy of our standard operating procedure (via QR code and/or printed handout) to explore during the session. By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to: 1.) Describe the concept and importance of food recovery to address food insecurity. 2.) Explain how they can actively support efforts to reduce food waste and increase prepared food donations in their own communities.

Presenters:

  • Dr. Alice Ammerman, UNC Center for HPDP Director, Distinguished Nutrition Faculty
