“Collaboration is like cottage cheese. It occasionally smells bad and separates easily.” (Thompson and Perry 1998)

When Hurricane Helene reached us, the North Carolina Inclusive Disaster Recovery Network (NCIDR) had already been ramping up its relationship infrastructure for days – sharing weather advisories, convening grantmakers, and firming up lines of communication.

As a cross-sectoral network, we work to ensure every community can respond to, recover from, and adapt to change in response to adverse events. Hurricane Helene represents the biggest challenge for us since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Join us for a candid conversation about what works — and what doesn’t — when collaborating for more resilient communities.

Discussants:

  • Alexandra Sirota, Executive Director, NC Budget & Tax Center (Durham County)
  • Curtis Hill, Supervising Advocate, Disability Rights North Carolina (Columbus County)
  • Laura Zapater, Interim Executive Director, Centro Unido Latino Americano (McDowell County)
  • Luz Sanabria-Reyes, Disaster Services Manager, VolunteerNC, Office of the Governor of North Carolina (Wake County)
  • Moderator: Andrew Loeb Shoenig, Program Director for Community Resilience, MDC Inc.
