Is there a place for Jews and Jewish Studies at the American University?
Universities are crucial to the strength and vitality of our country, and Jewish Studies has been foundational for shaping Jewish identity, culture, religion, and politics. Knowledge of Jewish history and thought is the foundation for understanding the meaning and responsibility of Jewish life.
This lecture will trace the rise of the modern university in 19th century Europe and the enthusiastic participation by Jews in academic scholarship as well as the hostility they have encountered at crucial moments. Jewish scholars made extraordinary contributions to the academy, and the field of Jewish Studies changed our understanding of Western civilization.
