UNC 5K M.A.R.C.H. – Team Based MedWAR Style Race

Join the UNC Wilderness Medicine Program for the inaugural UNC 5K M.A.R.C.H. on April 11th, 2026! This MedWAR style adventure race places teams of four on a 5K course through the UNC Outdoor Education Center’s multi-use trails, where they will encounter five wilderness medicine scenarios based on the M.A.R.C.H. protocol. Scenarios emphasize teamwork, physical challenges, and applied medical skills.

This event is open exclusively to UNC affiliated participants (students, faculty, staff, etc.). Teams will be judged on scenario performance, teamwork, and style—speed alone won’t win the day.

Start/Finish & Parking Location:
UNC Disc Golf Course
910 Raleigh Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27514

Teams will begin via an 0800 rolling start, departing every few minutes. Registration requires a complete team of four, including your team name and all teammate names. We are planning for 20 total teams.

Friends and family are welcome at the start/finish area, where we will have booths and activities. Please bring your own food, water, and drinks. This event is rain or shine, though it may be cancelled for safety; refunds cannot be issued if cancellation occurs.

A waiver will be sent electronically before race day and must be signed by all team members prior to participation.

Lump Gallery is pleased to present thesis exhibitions by UNC-Chapel Hill’s 2026 MFA graduating class.

At the conclusion of a rigorous, research-based two-year program, these artists consider the concept of place and their personal relationships to it. Each artist employs a range of media and responds to geographic, constructed, technological, and bodily autonomy. These relationships between place and personal narrative raise broader questions around positionality and society; communication and identity; and human impact. Revelation, purpose, and possibility guide each artist’s research-centered practices.

CJ Murphy creates works that render the intersection of technology, magic, and globalization material by reinvigorating found and discarded electrical waste. Michelle Lisa Polissaint draws on her experience in a strict religious community and deep research into the BITE method to discuss contemporary issues of indoctrination, high-control groups, and authoritarianism. Rojano Mohammadzadeh draws on Islamic prayer, talismanic imagery, text, and ritualized gestures to approach the immigrant experience through what she terms transplantation: survival through negotiating acceptance within a host body. Wendy Yamilett Morán’s practice explores the intersections of culture, realism, and spirituality through painting and ceramics, using their work to examine how identity, memory, and belonging are shaped within in-between spaces. Iris Moyan Wang is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily with ink painting and ceramics to create fluid and erotic hybridizations of bodies and botanicals that reimagine Chinese cultural heritage.

Native plants are resilient ecological powerhouses and anchor us to our botanical heritage. But too often, they’re dismissed as messy or weedy. It’s time to change the narrative! In this talk, we’ll explore how to use native plants to create gardens that are true people-pleasers. From wild to formal designs, lawns to containers, sun to shade, wildlife gardens to water gardens, even edible gardens — you’ll see how natives provide habitat while also serving as the basis for stunning landscapes. Whether you’re already a native-plant champion or just native-curious, you’ll come away with ideas to elevate your garden and give native plants the starring role they deserve.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

For over three decades, Andrea DeLong-Amaya has been living her life’s mission to honor the natural world through presenting and teaching classes about the horticulture, ecology, and importance of native plants in planned landscapes.

Over the prior 21 years, she served as the Center’s Director of Horticulture, overseeing the nine acres of Texas native plant gardens, and nursery programs. She’s been a staff member since 1998 and has over 30 years of experience with Texas native plants in horticulture, ecology and garden design. Recently, she has taken on a new role at the Wildflower Center focusing more on teaching and advancing interpretation in the gardens.

She has contributed numerous gardening articles to publications such as Taunton’s Fine Gardening, Rodale’s Organic Gardening, American Public Gardens Association’s Public Garden, Neil Sperry’s Gardens and e-Gardens, Texas Gardener and Wildflower (the Center’s member magazine). Her regionally best-selling book, the Texas Native Plant Primer (Timber Press), was released in March of 2025.

DeLong-Amaya has appeared numerous times on Central Texas Gardener, PBS’s long-running television program, and was a two-time guest on WNYC’s Science Friday. Jennifer Jewell featured Andrea’s work in her 2020 book, “The Earth in Her Hands: 75 Extraordinary Women Working in the World of Plants,” and interviewed DeLong-Amaya on the podcast Cultivating Place. The Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College honored DeLong-Amaya with the prestigious 2025 Scott Garden & Horticulture Award in March 2025.

ABOUT THE SIMS LECTURE

Every spring, the Garden offers a lecture focused on native plants and their conservation and ecology. The lecture series was initiated in 2000 with a gift from then Botanical Garden Foundation Board member Nancy Preston. Mrs. Preston wanted to honor her mother, Evelyn McNeill Sims, on the occasion of her 90th birthday. Born in Lumberton, North Carolina, Mrs. Sims was educated at UNC-Greensboro and later moved to Kingsport, Tennessee, with her husband and daughter. Wildflower excursions in the mountains surrounding Kingsport were a favorite activity for Mrs. Sims, who eventually became a volunteer guide at Bays Mountain Nature Park.

There is no "one-size-fits-all" approach to engaging patient, community, or other partners in your research. Rather, there are a variety of engagement methods to suit your study's needs, your research team's capacity, and your partners' interests.

This online training will describe three common approaches for working with patient, community, and other partners in your research: 1) consultative community feedback sessions; 2) advisory boards; and 3) sustained collaboration with partners as members of the research team.

The session will cover considerations for choosing these specific engagement methods, as well as concrete processes and steps for implementing each approach. Participation in our Engagement in Research 101 training is not required to attend this session; however, some knowledge of engagement, whether from prior training(s) or personal experience, may foster deeper understanding of the material in this session.

The accelerating loss of biodiversity, coupled with a decline in botany programs, organismal biology and plant identification skills, has created an urgent need to rebuild botanical capacity. Botanical work depends on both traditional skills, like field observation and specimen identification, but we also need contemporary tools that improve worker efficiency, accessibility, and scale. The development of digital infrastructures such as digitized herbarium specimen portals, online plant atlases, keys (books and digital), and data-driven conservation metrics allows a small number of trained botanists to have outsized impact, supporting research, conservation, land management, and education.

This presentation explores how the deliberate integration of tool development, student training, and public outreach can strengthen the next generation of human infrastructure needed to document, understand, advocate for, and protect plant diversity.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Joey Shaw is a Distinguished Service and UC Foundation Professor at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he has been on the faculty since 2005. He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Dr. Shaw’s career integrates herbarium science, floristics, plant conservation, molecular systematics, teaching, and public engagement, with a focus on building tools and communities of people that advance botanical research and conservation.

Her critically acclaimed photographic series, The Inner Passage traces a largely undocumented network of 17th and 18th century canals built by Black enslaved laborers. Through years of fieldwork and archival research, she uncovered the environmental and human histories encoded in these waterways. Working with the wet-plate collodion process and a mobile darkroom in remote marshlands, Richards creates images that echo the fluid, unstable terrain they depict. “I want people to read the work as a visual poem,” she says, “to feel the land telling its own story.”

Richards’ photographs and research were featured in Smithsonian Magazine (March 2022) in the article What the Haunting ‘Inner Passage’ Represented to the Enslaved, which received the American Society of Magazine Editors’ award for excellence in print and digital journalism. Her photographic work also received the Gold Medal Prize at the Lowell Thomas Competition (March 2022) and has been exhibited at the North Carolina Museum of Art, The Light Factory in Charlotte, and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Her work was previously highlighted in the UNC Carolina Alumni Review feature Uncharted Waters, Uncharted Ground (August 2020). Richards is currently a Photojournalism Fellow at Anderson Ranch in Aspen, Colorado (2021–present), where she works under the mentorship of James Estrin of The New York Times and Ed Kashi. Richards lives and works in the American South.

Book Description: A deeply moving photographic and narrative history of a southern waterway that the enslaved were forced to build—but which they ultimately used as a means of escape. In this book, Virginia McGee Richards documents the lost narrative of the Inner Passage through 60 extraordinary photographs of landscapes altered by slavery and portraits of Lowcountry descendants, along with an essay describing her discovery of this untold history. In an accompanying essay, Imani Perry writes about her own journey on the Inner Passage,
putting Black resistance to enslavement and Southern history into an immediate context. James Estrin brings decades of insight into photography and the power of visual storytelling to his affecting foreword. Together, these words and images offer a powerful living map of history.

Shakirah Hudani is an Assistant Professor in the Department of African, African American and Diaspora Studies (AAAD) at UNC. She is jointly appointed in the Department of City and Regional Planning (DCRP). Her work concentrates on African urbanism and post-conflict urban change.

The research for her award-winning book, Master Plans and Minor Acts: Repairing the City in Post-Genocide Rwanda (University of Chicago Press, 2024), focused on urban change in Rwanda, with relevance to the Great Lakes region, and to urban planning processes in African cities. She began working in Rwanda in 2002, examining the Gacaca transitional justice process, and more recently returned to research urbanization and contemporary planning. Her new research focuses on peripheral urban change in Nairobi, Kenya. She has held fellowships from the Institute for the Arts and Humanities at UNC, the Wenner Gren Foundation, and is a Rhodes Scholar (2004).

Drawing on research from her book, Professor Hudani will discuss urban change in Rwanda in relation to themes on African urbanism and post-conflict urbanism. At a time when cities have borne the cost of conflict across geographies, Hudani asks what it means to center reparative strategies in urban space, focusing on Rwanda and with reference to other conflict-affected sites. Hudani argues that Rwanda’s case shows the need for attention to local urban pedagogies of place, so as to integrate traumatic experience rather than erase varied spatial histories and modes of remembering.

Introductions will begin at 12:10. The presentation will be from 12:15 – 12:45 p.m., with a Q&A session to follow. Lunch will be served.

At the conclusion of a rigorous, research-based two-year program, these artists consider the concept of place and their personal relationships to it. Each artist employs a range of media and responds to geographic, constructed, technological, and bodily autonomy. These relationships between place and personal narrative raise broader questions around positionality and society; communication and identity; and human impact. Revelation, purpose, and possibility guide each artist’s research-centered practices.

CJ Murphy creates works that render the intersection of technology, magic, and globalization material by reinvigorating found and discarded electrical waste. Michelle Lisa Polissaint draws on her experience in a strict religious community and deep research into the BITE method to discuss contemporary issues of indoctrination, high-control groups, and authoritarianism. Rojano Mohammadzadeh draws on Islamic prayer, talismanic imagery, text, and ritualized gestures to approach the immigrant experience through what she terms transplantation: survival through negotiating acceptance within a host body. Wendy Yamilett Morán’s practice explores the intersections of culture, realism, and spirituality through painting and ceramics, using their work to examine how identity, memory, and belonging are shaped within in-between spaces. Iris Moyan Wang is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily with ink painting and ceramics to create fluid and erotic hybridizations of bodies and botanicals that reimagine Chinese cultural heritage.

This course introduces how to incorporate DAGs (Directed Acyclic Graphs) in analysis planning to help think through what variables to collect and use (or refrain from using) in an analysis.

Topics include:

Introducing the structure of DAGs and the rules for using them to guide variable selectionA deep dive into the types of variable relations captured in DAGs with emphasis on mediation, moderation, effect modification, confounding and colliders and their potential to introduce bias in analysisHands on example of how to create and evaluate DAGs in R using the package daggityUse of DAGs may help inform data collection and analytical plans in ways that enhance reproducibility.

In this course we will examine current recommendations from the literature regarding integrating AI (specifically LLMs) into the process of qualitative coding. Acknowledging that a wide range of qualitative approaches exist, all examples and recommendations in this course will be based on the 6 Phase Thematic Analysis Framework proposed by Braun & Clarke 2006 to simplify the course scope.

No perquisites in qualitative methods or coding are required for this course – just bring your computer & your curiosity!

In the course we will:

Review the qualitative approach of Thematic Analysis using the Braun & Clarke FrameworkGet a high-level, very big picture understanding of LLMs, what they are & how they generate “natural language”Examine current recommendations in the literature on incorporating LLMs in Thematic AnalysisDo hands-on activities in R that implement some of the current recommendations using the Braun & Clarke Framework. Grasslands across North America, including the remnant prairies, glades, and savannas of the Southeast, are some of the most diverse and threatened ecosystems on Earth. Urban growth, habitat fragmentation, and changes in natural disturbances like fire and grazing have made it harder to restore native plant diversity at scale. In this Lunchbox Talk, learn about Jordan Argrett’s research on an underused restoration tool: native root hemiparasitic plants. These plants form symbiosis by tapping into the roots of their neighbors for nutrients. Acting as “pseudo-grazers,” they can make big impacts on plant communities by curbing dominant species, rebalancing the competitive landscape, and creating space for native wildflowers to thrive. Drawing on experimental ecology, conservation horticulture, and restoration strategies, Jordan’s work aims to provide southeastern conservation practitioners with practical, scalable tools to help bring back biodiversity.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Jordan Argrett is a 5th year PhD Candidate at the University of Georgia's Odum School of Ecology. Jordan is broadly interested in symbiosis and how species interactions can alter ecosystem processes. His dissertation research focuses on how plant-to-plant parasitism and plant-fungal mutualisms influence community structure and nutrient cycling in North American alpine meadows. Alongside his dissertation research, Jordan is a regional and local advocate for parasitic plants in the Southeast. By combining experimental ecology, restoration science, and community collaboration, Jordan aims to deliver actionable, evidence-based tools to conserve southeastern parasites, and utilize their unique ecology to enhance the success of grassland restoration efforts.

Noah Kittner, PhD is the Director of the Energy Transition Initiative at UNC’s Institute for the Environment and an Associate Professor in the Departments of Environmental Sciences and Engineering and City and Regional Planning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Kittner’s research examines how emerging energy technologies, including renewable energy, energy storage, and electrification strategies can support reliable, affordable, and low-carbon energy systems in North Carolina and beyond, with projects in Kosovo, Thailand, and California.

Dr. Kittner received his PhD in Energy and Resources from the University of California at Berkeley. He received his BS in Environmental Science (highest honors) with a dual minor in Mathematics and Urban Planning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Lump Gallery is pleased to present thesis exhibitions by UNC-Chapel Hill’s 2026 MFA graduating class.

At the conclusion of a rigorous, research-based two-year program, these artists consider the concept of place and their personal relationships to it. Each artist employs a range of media and responds to geographic, constructed, technological, and bodily autonomy. These relationships between place and personal narrative raise broader questions around positionality and society; communication and identity; and human impact. Revelation, purpose, and possibility guide each artist’s research-centered practices.

CJ Murphy creates works that render the intersection of technology, magic, and globalization material by reinvigorating found and discarded electrical waste. Michelle Lisa Polissaint draws on her experience in a strict religious community and deep research into the BITE method to discuss contemporary issues of indoctrination, high-control groups, and authoritarianism. Rojano Mohammadzadeh draws on Islamic prayer, talismanic imagery, text, and ritualized gestures to approach the immigrant experience through what she terms transplantation: survival through negotiating acceptance within a host body. Wendy Yamilett Morán’s practice explores the intersections of culture, realism, and spirituality through painting and ceramics, using their work to examine how identity, memory, and belonging are shaped within in-between spaces. Iris Moyan Wang is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily with ink painting and ceramics to create fluid and erotic hybridizations of bodies and botanicals that reimagine Chinese cultural heritage.

Through a combination of presentations, case discussions, and small-group work, participants will leave with:

In this course, following an exploration of the history and development of GT, we examine GT basic guidelines and major strategies, including initial line-by-line and focused coding, the use of gerunds, memoing, diagramming, theoretical sampling, and categorizing. Throughout the sessions, there is an emphasis on CGT’s epistemological foundation and resultant adaptations to the research process, including regarding the literature review, researcher positionality/ies and reflexivity, and participant involvement.

The course will include a number of hands-on exercises to exemplify, and give participants an opportunity to practice, the strategies being discussed. For the coding exercise, you may bring and use some of your own qualitative data, or if you do not have data yet, some will be supplied. Clear guidelines and support are provided to course participants with regard to all aspects of CGT.

The sessions will utilize CGT readings and resources from Kathy Charmaz, Robert Thornberg, Adele Clarke, and myself, and will draw on the extensive scholarship of Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss. A pack of materials will be shared with participants in advance of the course. This course will be of interest to those doing full CGT studies but also to those who may be interested in learning about and potentially using some of the powerful GT strategies (such as coding) in studies with a different overall methodological approach.

This course involves a sequence of presentations and practical workshops with narrative analysis strategies applicable to small or large studies that sample verbal and/or visual discourse. We begin with an introduction to dynamic narrative inquiry, followed by modules with three analysis strategies that yield findings to a wide range of relevant social science research questions. With examples from prior published studies, I present rationales and methodology, including character mapping (to identify meaning in narrative actors, actions, and relationships); plot analysis (to identify how narrative structures express logics and intentions); and values analysis (to identify speaker/author/ purposes). The final hour of the day is devoted to discussing course participants’ insights from the workshops and implications for future research, practice, and policy.
