What can our relationship with the sky still teach us today?

Across cultures and centuries, humanity’s fascination with the heavens has shaped religion, poetry, literature, music, art, navigation, timekeeping, and the ways we understand ourselves and our place in the world. That connection is still very much alive.

Join Professor Sheila Kannappan for a visually rich and thought-provoking journey through humanity’s enduring relationship with the sky. Tracing our celestial awareness from the earliest emergence of Homo sapiens to the present day, this presentation invites us to reflect on how deeply astronomical awe is woven into human culture, not just as a relic of the past, but as a vital perspective for modern life.

Through this lens, we will explore the values the cosmos can inspire, including openness, connectedness, growth, and humility, and why they may matter now more than ever.

Come rediscover the sky, and perhaps, a renewed sense of wonder!

It is well known that the analysis of nested data structures using traditional general linear models (e.g., ANOVA or regression) is flawed, oftentimes substantially so: Tests of significance are likely biased and within- and between-group effects are confounded with one another. All of these limitations can be addressed within the multilevel model.

This course will introduce participants to generative AI tools in qualitative software—ATLAS.ti, MAXQDA, and NVivo. These tools can be used to summarize textual documents through AI-assisted memo writing and to support coding, with each program taking a different approach to integrating human judgment and AI features.

The course will also demonstrate how ChatGPT can be used to code textual data, how to create effective prompts, and how to import results from ChatGPT into qualitative software for further analysis. This interactive, hands-on workshop will introduce participants to a framework for considering the consequences of using generative AI in qualitative research designs and workflows (Paulus, 2023; Paulus & Lester, 2024). We will start by acknowledging inherent risks and ethical dilemmas posed by the development of large language models and how generative AI is challenging the essence of what it means to do qualitative work (Paulus & Marone, 2025; Paulus, Lester & Davis, 2025). We will learn how to distinguish between methodological strategies and technological tactics, i.e. why researchers must first know how they want to work with their data before choosing the best tools to do so (Woolf & Silver, 2018). We will then discuss the current ‘state of play’ regarding the various genres of AI-assist technologies available to qualitative researchers and how to select the most appropriate platform. We will then compare and contrast several AI-assist platforms for managing and analyzing qualitative data. Finally, we will discuss best practices for how to report the use of AI in research studies (Lester & Paulus, forthcoming) and how to reflexively consider the consequences of doing so. Sample interview data will be used for the practice exercises. Workshop time will alternative between short lectures and demonstrations, small group discussions, practical hands-on activities, and application of principles learned to the participants’ own research studies and data.

This course introduces students to Stata and data management. It is tailored for non-users who want to learn how to manage data more effectively. Each day, the class will demonstrate how to use the commands, followed by hands-on exercises using sample datasets. By the end of the course, participants will be able to perform the following:• Use Stata’s Graphical User Interference (GUI) with dialog boxes
• Run Stata commands from the command window and from scripts (“do” files)
• Enter, transfer, and save data in different formats, e.g., Excel, SAS, SPSS, text files
• Inspect the contents of a Stata dataset
• Append, merge, and sort datasets
• Identify and clean duplicate records
• Calculate new variables
• Create and manage labels for variables and values
• Recode variables
• Work with blocks of observations (“by” processing)
• Perform row-wise calculations (groups of columns)
• Collapse data into summary tables
• Reshape between long and wide formats
• Save and reproduce your work with “do” files
• Obtain descriptive statistics
• Create graphs and tables
• Run basic statistical analyses, e.g., Ordinary Least Squares regression, correlation matrices, Chi-square tests, t-tests

This course will cover the basics of:
• Confirmatory factor analysis
• Path analysis
• Structural equation models with latent variables
• Evaluating indirect relationships between variables
• Using fit statistics to test competing hypotheses
Examples and exercises will use the R package lavaan, but content from this course will be directly applicable to other programs that estimate structural equation models, such as Mplus and Stata.

Participants should be familiar with regression modeling before taking this course. Experience using R will be helpful but is not required.

In this course, following an exploration of the history and development of GT, we examine GT basic guidelines and major strategies, including initial line-by-line and focused coding, the use of gerunds, memoing, diagramming, theoretical sampling, and categorizing. Throughout the sessions, there is an emphasis on CGT’s epistemological foundation and resultant adaptations to the research process, including regarding the literature review, researcher positionality/ies and reflexivity, and participant involvement.

The course will include a number of hands-on exercises to exemplify, and give participants an opportunity to practice, the strategies being discussed. For the coding exercise, you may bring and use some of your own qualitative data, or if you do not have data yet, some will be supplied. Clear guidelines and support are provided to course participants with regard to all aspects of CGT.

The sessions will utilize CGT readings and resources from Kathy Charmaz, Robert Thornberg, Adele Clarke, and myself, and will draw on the extensive scholarship of Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss. A pack of materials will be shared with participants in advance of the course. This course will be of interest to those doing full CGT studies but also to those who may be interested in learning about and potentially using some of the powerful GT strategies (such as coding) in studies with a different overall methodological approach.

The first half of the session will provide structured lecture content, and the second half will offer time for participants to ask questions and discuss the specific projects they are working on.

This course involves a sequence of presentations and practical workshops with narrative analysis strategies applicable to small or large studies that sample verbal and/or visual discourse. We begin with an introduction to dynamic narrative inquiry, followed by modules with three analysis strategies that yield findings to a wide range of relevant social science research questions. With examples from prior published studies, I present rationales and methodology, including character mapping (to identify meaning in narrative actors, actions, and relationships); plot analysis (to identify how narrative structures express logics and intentions); and values analysis (to identify speaker/author/ purposes). The final hour of the day is devoted to discussing course participants’ insights from the workshops and implications for future research, practice, and policy.
